Morocco

An ethnically diverse country with a rich cultural heritage and history, Morocco has become renowned as a tourist destination because of its thriving and cosmopolitan cities, such as Marrakesh, the capital Rabat and its largest city, Casablanca. The history of the country as a meeting place of cultures is due to its location on the northern tip of Africa and its proximity to Europe; it has been home to various diverse peoples over the years, many of whom have left their mark in distinctive ways on the culture of Morocco.

The literature of Morocco is evidence of the country’s status as a meeting point of cultures, writers such as Mohammed Choukri, Abdallah Laroui, Abdelfattah Kilito, and Fatima Mernissi, have published their works in both French and English whilst expatriate writers such as Pierre Loti, William S. Burroughs, and Paul Bowles have used the unique atmosphere of this country as an inspiration.
